Wife is charged in man’s slaying

SARGENT — Mary Katherine “Cathie” Grigsby was on a trip with her church the weekend her husband was killed, but that hasn’t kept Matagorda County authorities from charging her with what they believe was “murder for hire.”
Police said Jack Grigsby, 72, was found by Cathie Grigsby, 59, inside his Old Caney Road home about 9 p.m. May 17. The couple was estranged, and there was no sign of forced entry, Matagorda County Sheriff’s Sgt. Charlotte Brown has said.
Grigsby died from a gunshot wound to the head between 12:30 and 9 p.m. that day, according to the Galveston County Medical Examiner. Cathie Grigsby called 911 after discovering the body, Brown said.
Cathie Grigsby and Donald Ray Harrison, 50, of Denison each have been charged with capital murder, according to a press release from Matagorda County Sheriff’s Capt. Richard Rooth. Both were arrested Friday —Grigsby in an apartment in Clute and Harrison in his home in Denison, north of Dallas.
Rooth said he did not know if Harrison and Cathie Grigsby had any kind of relationship before the death. He also declined to say whether any money changed hands between the two and would not comment on any possible motive.
“One person did the hiring and one person had to do the killing,” Rooth said. “Murder for hire would imply that somebody paid enumeration in the case.”
He did say the sheriff’s office “worked tirelessly to put the pieces of the puzzle together” on the case. Matagorda County District Attorney Steven Reis declined comment, saying the case is under investigation.
Jack and Cathie Grigsby attended church in Brazoria, and Cathie Grigsby was on a church committee trip the weekend of May 17, said Joe Knight with a Little Taste of Sargent restaurant. Jack Grigsby was dog-sitting for his wife the weekend he was killed, police have said.
“She was always traveling with some church committee or something,” Knight said. “She was on a church trip that Sunday. That’s why he was keeping her dog.”
Knight was friends with Jack Grigsby but didn’t know Cathie Grigsby.
“Not many people here really knew her, she was traveling so much,” Knight said. “She didn’t talk much, and I don’t know that I ever saw her in the restaurant.”
Until news of the arrest, Knight said he’d never heard of Harrison.
Before the shooting, Knight said he talked to Jack Grigsby “a couple of times a week,” and he was in the restaurant to pick up a hamburger three nights before he was found dead.
“He did a lot of charity work, and they were both big dog lovers,” Knight said. “They went to church together, but no one was surprised when they broke up. They had busted up two or three times before.”
Knight said Grigsby was “depressed” over the split, but he wouldn’t have harmed himself.
“Everybody knew in the beginning he wouldn’t do himself in,” he said.
Harrison and Cathie Grigsby are being held on $1 million bond each.
