Clute puts Brazos River Authority on notice

Published June 1, 2009

CLUTE — In an effort to encourage the Brazos River Authority to take better care of Clute’s wastewater treatment plant, City Council approved giving notice it will terminate the authority’s contract in one year.

At its regular meeting Thursday, City Council approved a joint resolution with Richwood to give Brazos River Authority notice stating unless the plant is better cared for, the two cities will end their contract with the authority.

The Brazos River Authority operates Clute’s and Richwood’s jointly owned wastewater treatment plant.

Richwood and Clute are not happy with the maintenance the authority has done on the plant, Clute City Manager Kyle McCain said. Clute has had to pay fines because of its mistakes, he said.

Brazos River Authority officials have promised they are putting in new personnel and will clean up their act, but by taking this measure, if the authority does not begin better maintaining the plant, the cities can terminate the contract, he said.

The two cities then could hire another company or use city employees to operate the plant, McCain said.

Richwood City Council will discuss approving the same resolution at its next meeting.

In other business Thursday, council members:

ELECTED: Councilwo-man Shelly Key as mayor pro tem. Key will fill in for Mayor Calvin Shiflet when he is absent from meetings.

APPROVED: Applying for a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant to clean a portion of Oyster Creek and authorized an interlocal agreement with Lake Jackson. Cleaning Clute’s 41?2 miles of Oyster Creek will add $74,841 to Lake Jackson’s $366,000 contract.

Lake Jackson received the grant earlier this year, and Clute now also will be included in the grant. Each city will use its own workers to take the debris to their mulch sites.

Clearing the creek will make sure that when heavy rains come, debris will not pile up at a bridge and take out a bridge, McCain said.

“It’s a definite benefit to the city and the county,” Shiflet said.

APPOINTED: Greg Rowland and Kenny Vernor to the economic development board of directors.
