Flu, Maw Maws and fabric dominate discussion

Published August 30, 2009

I mentioned this in last Wednesday’s paper, but if you missed it, here it is again. Randall’s is now giving flu shots. Note it is NOT the H1N1 swine flu serum, but the plain old flu vaccine.

Here is a little hint for you: If you can take aspirin, take one before getting the shot and your arm won’t be as sore. I swear it works. I took one after I got my shot — it still worked. Or maybe it wasn’t going to be sore anyway. But, an ounce of prevention … and whatever the rest of that quote is.

I love this next letter and after you read it you will understand why. She is singin’ my praises, and I’m sittin’ here eatin’ it up!

Dear Gin,

I feel like I’ve known you for years and we are good friends and neighbors. I truly love your recipes and articles in our newspaper. I am from Carlyss, La., which is about 20 miles from Lake Charles. I went to school with Katie Leithead’s husband and enjoy her recipes also.

I am writing because I don’t do computers or cell phones. I see the need for them, but I don’t need them. Ha! I really don’t want to be contacted 24-7, so the mail and home portable phones are fine for me. I guess you can tell I am an old Maw Maw. I have two daughters and three grandchildren (one girl, two boys) and two granddogs (Yorkie and Pomeranian).

I have rambled on enough. I really am writing to ask about any recipe books you may have available. When I get my newspapers, you are the first article I turn to; it makes my whole day. I really wish you were in the paper more!

Well, please let me know how to get your collection of wonderful and easy recipes.

Thank you so much.

Geneva Gotte, Sulphur, La.

Geneva,

Talk about making someone’s day! You just summed up what this whole column is all about. Friends and neighbors ... yes ma’am!

Katie Leithead is another one I have never met in person, but I consider her a friend. I feel as if I know her whole family as well. I’m sure Katie’s husband, Buzzy, would tell you “hi.” Or maybe he will tell you “hi” his own personal self since he is an orthodontist in Lake Charles; you might take your grandchildren to him.

Anyway, I thank you very much for the nice letter!

I don’t have a cookbook, but don’t give up; I’m planning on doing one one of these days.

Let me tell ya’, you are talking to another Maw Maw. If I didn’t do a column, I doubt I would feel the need for a computer.

I carry a cell phone, but it is strictly for me to use if I need to call for help in case of car trouble or something similar. Isn’t it amazing that people who are perfectly well mannered are totally out to lunch when it comes to cell phone use? And isn’t it also amazing we would have to have a law banning cell phone use while driving!

But I guess we do; every other person I see behind the wheel is on the phone.

Hi Gin,

Sorry it has taken me so long to address this column. After reading of the fabric woes, I felt a kinship. There are slim to no pickings in my area, either. I have, however, found an online site that has nice basic fabrics and occasional higher level ones. It also has pretty good sales. It is www.fabric.com/.

Also, Jo-Ann’s has a Web site: www.joann. com/joann/.

Hancock Fabrics, www.hancockfabrics.com/, has a Web site, too. There are others, but I have not used them, so cannot give personal comment on them.

Times are changing and we have to adapt and wait. But, I have noticed that there is an upsurge in people learning to sew, especially younger people. Perhaps the pendulum is beginning to swing back.

Nony Mouse

Nony,

Thank you for the Web sites! I hate to sew, but I am so glad I learned. After I was finished making clothes, I have used my ability to sew making numerous other things. I just finished making floor-to-ceiling shower curtains for the guest bathrooms for the new “old” house.

Even though most of it involved pressing and straight stitching, you would have to have a little knowledge of how to sew. The tiebacks came out really cute. I won’t even attempt to describe them, but trust me, they came out really cute. Ruffles and covered buttons were used — ruffles for one bathroom and covered buttons for the other.

For all the local folks, a reader wrote in with this information on two fabric stores we have right here in Lake Jackson.

One is Katartizo Fabrics and is located in the shopping center across from Kroger in Clute. The other one is Tammie’s Touch at the corner of This Way and That Way. (Yes, folks in Louisiana, those are the names of the streets. We also have His Way, Any Way, Parking Way, Center Way and I’m sure there are many more Ways, but I can’t think of any more of them right now; I have a column to do.)

Katartizo’s has a wide selection of services concerning fabrics. There are fabric books, samples available for special order and they specialize in designing custom looks for your home. They also can put you in touch with local seamstresses and upholstery experts.

Tammie’s Touch also offers lots of other things besides fabrics such as artwork, decorative candles, furniture, custom floral designs and Christian gifts.

The person who sent in this information didn’t sign their name, but they did close with this: “Now, for those of you with discerning taste, who can’t make it to the cutest store in Palmer, Alaska, (owned by Gin’s daughter), be sure to try out these two local gems. I know you won’t be disappointed.”

I have a correction regarding Pom Pom’s in Palmer, Alaska. I said Cheryl didn’t handle fabrics any longer ... just like a kid to make a liar out of ya’, she does.
