Career military man ready for Iraq
Published July 27, 2009
LAKE JACKSON — Sgt. 1st Class Boots Henry truly enjoys his job as a soldier, but leaving his family is always the hard part.
The 38-year-old Lake Jackson resident is leaving in September for his first tour in Iraq. He has served all over the country and in Kosovo, said his wife, Samona Henry.
He signed up for the Army as a 17-year-old “to get out of Moran, Texas,” but soon found this was the job tailor-made for him, Boots Henry said.
“There are people that really enjoy the Army, and I’m one of them,” he said.
In Iraq, he anticipates missing a few home comforts, but more than anything he said he will miss his wife and kids, Henry said.
“Don’t worry about me,” Henry said. “It’s my wife and kids; they suffer more than anybody.”
Henry was surprised by a visit from the Brazoria County Cavalry on Saturday evening, especially considering what he called his wife’s inability to keep a secret.
“When she told me to step outside, I thought there was a fire,” Henry said.
Henry has six children, from ages 16 to 1. They all stood and watched as their father was honored.
“I think it’s pretty cool,” said Dalton Henry, his oldest son. “He helps the country and protects us.”
However, Samona Henry is worried more about this tour than she has ever worried about past deployments. She knows this time might be more dangerous.
But Boots Henry is looking toward the future. He recently re-enlisted for six more years and doesn’t see any retirement in sight.
“I’ll stay until the Army says I’ve got to go,” Henry said.
