Bucs land 3 on 24-5A team

Published June 17, 2005

Brazoswood landed three players on the All-District 24-5A baseball team, leading the area in selections to the squad.

The Bucs’ all-district selections were led by catcher Matt Vern, who coach Bobby Williams said was one of the most-feared offensive players in the district. Dustin Damian and Ryan Murphy also grabbed first-team selections for Brazoswood.

“I thought that was pretty good,” Brazoswood coach Bobby Williams said of his team’s three first-teamers. “I had a couple other guys I wanted to get on there, but they didn’t get it. Royce Moore had a high batting average for us all season and Jake Fedorchak had a very good season.”

Alvin’s Leo Delgado was the only Yellowjacket picked for the first team.

Alvin coach Mike Rogers said Delgado’s experience and leadership was invaluable for a young team.

“He’s been on varsity the last three years,” Rogers said. “So he had experience and was a good leader for us. It’s going to be a challenge to replace him. We know he’s going to do well at Alvin Community College.”

The most valuable player of the district was Clear Lake’s Jeff Smith, and the first-team pitchers were Clear Brook’s James Ferguson and Clear Creek’s duo of Stephen Trevino and Eric Ruff.

Creek had the right side of the first-team infield with first baseman Login Corbin and second baseman Jereme Brooks. The first-team shortstop was Lake’s Mark Noggle and the third baseman was Efrain Gonzalez from Brook.

Brook’s Dane Yelovich and Stephen Buchanan were first-team outfield selections with Pearland’s Michael Speciale and Lake’s Chris Dinges.

Lake’s Jordan Pennington was named the top designated hitter and teammate Adam Wolfe was selected as the comeback player of the year. Lake coach Sean Wood was named the coach of the year and Brook’s David Prahm was tabbed as the newcomer of the year.

Brazoswood’s Fedorchak joined Alvin’s James Brown and Junior Buenrostro on the all-district second team.

Pearland had a pair of pitchers, Taylor Mapes and Nick Hammons, on the second team. They were joined by pitchers Rob Brasier from Ball and Michael Cueto from Lake.

Creek’s Joey Latulippe was selected as the second-team catcher and Pearland’s Nick Long and Aaron Varnum were selected at second base and shortstop, respectively.

The outfield consisted of Norman Whittkamp (Creek), Brandon Chidester (Brook) and Taylor Lobb (Pearland). The second-team designated hitter was Ball’s William Schuster.

To get back to the postseason next year, Williams said Brazoswood’s goals will be simple.

“We have to do the little things right,” he said. “We have to get bunts down. Not being able to get a bunt down hurt us at times. We have to get timely hits. When we had runners on base, a lot of times we couldn’t get them in and that hurt us.”

The honorable mention pitchers were Brazoswood’s Tim Jones, Pearland’s Chad Buckmaster and Brook’s Chase Waterwall.

The catcher was Pearland’s Justin Cockrell and the infielders were Brazoswood’s Matt Murphy (first base), Alvin’s Ricky Cantu (second base), Brook’s Chase Cook (Brook), Ball’s Cameron Duplechin (shortstop) and Brook’s Will O’Sullivan (shortstop). The outfielders were Brazoswood’s Royce Moore and Lake’s Dan Green.

The district’s coaches got together after the regular season to vote on the all-district teams.
