Alvin woman dies in collision

Published November 11, 2009

ALVIN — An Alvin woman died Tuesday morning after police said the car she was driving was hit by a pickup after it tried to pass a dump truck off FM 2403.

Mary Bock, 53, was driving north in the 5600 block of FM 2403 at about 6:50 a.m. Tuesday when a truck traveling south moved into her lane and hit her head-on, Department of Public Safety Cpl. James Wright said.

Another truck following Bock crashed into the wreckage. The woman and the 4-year-old boy inside did not appear to be injured, Wright said.

They were taken to Angleton Danbury Medical Center as a precaution while the driver of the truck, Juan Muniz, 35, of Kingsville, was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston for a back injury, police said.

Muniz appeared to be passing the dump truck on the right shoulder as they both drove south on FM 2403, Wright said.

The back of Muniz’s Dodge Ram clipped the front of the dump truck when the empty dump truck tried to turn right, police said.

“Basically like a sideswipe,” Wright said.

Police said Muniz’s truck went through wet grass off the road, and when he got back on the asphalt, he moved into oncoming traffic and hit Bock, who drove a Chevrolet Malibu.

Megan Maier, 21, of Alvin and her son, Coby, then hit the pickup and the Malibu before ending up in the ditch, police said.

Bock died at the scene and her body was taken to the Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy.

Traffic was closed at the crash site from about 9 a.m. to noon.

All involved were wearing their seat belts, except Muniz. Alcohol is not suspected as a factor.

Hospital officials did not return calls seeking Muniz’s condition. He was alert and talking to medical personnel at the scene, Wright said.

No citations had been issued Tuesday, but officials were still investigating the accident.
