Communities gather during ‘Night Out’
Published October 7, 2009
Jones Creek officials were “ecstatic” Tuesday after more than 100 adults and their children attended the city’s first National Night Out event.
The front lawn of City Hall was packed with residents talking with Jones Creek marshal’s officers, volunteer firefighters, Brazoria County Sheriff Charles Wagner and Pct. 4 Constable Fred Kanter.
Children played on a moonwalk and took a cruise down the road with volunteer firefighters.
“It’s been a great turnout,” Marshal’s Sgt. William Tidwell said.
In West Columbia, families gathered at First Capitol Park to eat hot dogs, visit with the local police and fire department personnel and catch up on old times with friends.
Children ran all over the place, jumping in the moonwalk and bouncing their way down the slide before they ran back in to start it all over. The West Columbia Volunteer Fire Department took children and their parents out for a ride on the fire trucks, making the children laugh and scream from their new height.
“We wanted to get out there and interact with the community and let them know we’re here for them and to help promote community policing.” West Columbia Police Detective Curtis Wulf said. “I think it’s going really well.”
National Night Out began in 1984 as a way to strengthen neighborhood spirit and trust in law enforcement, according to the National Association of Town Watch. More than 37 million people in 15,449 communities now take part in the event.
Celebrations also took place Tuesday night across Brazoria County, including in Freeport, Clute, Alvin and Lake Jackson.
