Clute hires engineer for sewer line work
Published January 10, 2009
CLUTE — Fixing the sewer line along Old Angleton Road has become a top priority for Clute City Council.
During its regular meeting Thursday night, City Council hired KSA Engineers Inc. to engineer the sewer transmission line improvements. The engineers will be paid $373,600 and began work Friday; construction is scheduled to begin in December.
“The concern from council is that this is a safety issue,” Mayor Calvin Shiflet said.
The engineers were encouraged to finish the project as quickly as possible.
City Manager Kyle McCain estimates the total project will cost less than $3 million.
Clute and Richwood still will undergo the arbitration necessary to decide how much each city should pay toward the project. Both cities use the pipeline to transport sewage, though the problematic pipe is in Clute.
In other business Thursday, City Council:
PAID: JTM Construction LLC. its second payment of $62,879 and third payment of $51,956 for moving the water pipeline along Highway 332 between Dixie Drive and Main Street in preparation for the highway expansion. The total project is contracted to cost $247,390 and will be finished within the next couple of weeks, McCain said.
APPROVED: Having a public hearing Feb. 12 to discuss the condition of the house at 221 Maddox St. The owners were told the house was unsafe after a fire in December 2007, building official Doug Coffey said. They were given several chances to either demolish the house themselves or repair it, he said.
PURCHASED: Two new Ford Crown Victoria police cruisers for $21,290 each. These are the same type vehicles the police department has used for the past several years and the purchase was a budgeted expense, Police Chief Mark Wicker said.
APPROVED: The purchase of two air-conditioning units for the police department at a cost not to exceed $14,850. Wicker brought a bid before the board and was asked to find two additional bids for the air-conditioners before making the purchase. The current air-conditioners are not working, Wicker said.
