Clerks hurt in store robberies
Published June 24, 2009
MANVEL — Authorities in two counties have connected what they believe is a pattern of robberies by a mustached man wearing a hat and wielding a knife that has left two store clerks wounded.
Police are looking for the man they believe robbed five convenience stores by holding a knife to clerks’ throats and demanding money.
One Missouri City store clerk was stabbed and is in stable condition at Ben Taub Hospital while a Manvel store clerk was treated for a cut to his hand, police said.
A man wearing a burnt orange shirt and blue jeans walked into a gas station in the 17500 block of Morris Avenue in Manvel about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday and demanded cash, Manvel police said. He held a knife to the clerk’s throat then left the store in a beige Suzuki XL7 after taking an undisclosed amount of cash, Manvel Police Capt. Aaron Bell said.
The clerk, who was alone in the store when the robber walked in, received a cut to his hand and was treated by EMS at the scene
The clerk walked outside after the robbery and told some bystanders at a nearby fast-food restaurant what happened. One of them was an off-duty Iowa Colony firefighter, who followed the XL7 down Highway 6 toward Fort Bend County when the robber’s car left the road and landed in a canal close to CR 48, Bell said.
The driver got out of the car and ran before police arrived, Brazoria County Sheriff’s Capt. Richard Foreman said.
“The vehicle was submerged,” Foreman said. “But they were able to look into the vehicle and see no one was inside.”
They did see money floating in the water around the vehicle, Foreman said.
Manvel police, Brazoria County Sheriff’s deputies and a Houston Police Department helicopter helped search a 1-square mile area around the vehicle before stopping about 2:30 a.m. without finding the robber, Foreman said.
A clerk at the Manvel store was treated for a cut to his hand at the scene, Manvel Police state in a release.
The car turned out to have been stolen Friday from the same Manvel gas station. Fort Bend County Sheriff’s investigators believe the same man used the car to rob three Fort Bend County gas stations Saturday and another Sunday, said Terriann Carlson, Fort Bend County Sheriff’s office spokeswoman.
“We released the car to them to process it,” Bell said.
Two of the robberies happened in Missouri City and two happened in the Fresno area, near the Brazoria County line, Carlson said.
“Our detectives are passing out Crime Stoppers flyers” in those areas, Carlson said.
There have been several images taken from video surveillance of the robber, Carlson said.
The robber is described as a 6-foot white male, slender build with brown hair and a mustache, police said.
Those with information can call (281) 341-4665 or Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers at (281) 342-TIPS. Manvel police can be reached at (281) 489-1212.
