Freeport man arrested in bank scheme
Published June 13, 2009
LAKE JACKSON — A Freeport man police say was part of an illegal check-cashing ring was arrested Friday on accusations he and at least two others took $24,200 from a local credit union.
Russell Anthony Baker, 21, was charged with felony engaging in organized criminal activity after being arrested at 11 a.m. at a probation office in the 100 block of Live Oak, Sgt. Mike Bailey said.
Police believe Baker, Freeport resident Valerie Williams and Clute resident Kadrian Wilson took part in the alleged scheme. They would cash checks at a credit union in the 1000 block of FM 2004 on accounts from other banks that did not have enough money to cover the amounts, Bailey said.
They are suspected of doing it more than once from Oct. 24 to Nov. 5.
Williams, 19, of Freeport and Wilson, 19, of Clute, also are being sought for felony engaging in organized criminal activity, Bailey said.
Police also are looking into two other suspects, a 21-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman from Richwood, but have yet to file warrants for their arrest, Bailey said.
Baker was at the probation office to check in for prior offenses, Bailey said. Police arrested him without incident.
Baker was awaiting a bond hearing late Friday, Bailey said. He is expected to be taken to the Brazoria County Detention Center.
