Curtain falls on summer as autumn arrives

Published September 23, 2009

Yesterday was the first day of autumn. I just love this time of year, but I can’t wait for the temperatures to cool down so it really feels like fall.

The autumn season brings out a host of events the whole family can enjoy, those wonderful gatherings of family and friends we find at bazaars, craft shows, county fairs, pumpkin patches, haunted houses and fall festivals and right on in to the holiday season of joyous celebrations.

I have vivid memories of my parents loading all of us kids in the car and taking us out for a fun day at our Catholic bazaars or an evening at the county fair. These were such fun times for all of us as we visited with our friends, played games and ate lots of yummy food. There were always games for children of all ages, everything from moon walks to fish ponds, rollercoaster rides and Ferris wheels.

I remember we ate lots of snow cones, funnel cakes, candied apples, turkey legs, hamburgers and sausage on a stick.

Last Sunday was the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church’s annual bazaar in Damon, which I attend every year and help my cousin, Carol, sell baked goods. I’m talking about real baked goodies like kolaches (cream cheese, apricot, poppy seed, cherry and prune) apple strudels, cobblers, pies, brownies, cakes and cookies. We are selling nonstop from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.! The early birds get the kolaches because they are all sold by 10 a.m.

The Catholic bazaars are a child’s wonderland with all the games for them to play. Mom and Dad have lots of things to do after a delicious barbecue lunch. There are always bingo games, cake walks, plant sales and a terrific live auction and band.

If you missed taking your family out last Sunday then mark your calendar for these upcoming events for the whole family:

Every weekend offers a day to spend with the family having fun and eating some great homemade goodies. Take the camera and capture those big smiles on the little ones’ faces. Cherish these fun times together.
