Families have world of activities

Published April 22, 2009

Today is Earth Day, so kids of all ages will probably bring home the results of projects they have been working on this week. Continue this learning trend by spending time with your children at home talking to them about the benefits of recycling and reusing products.

Be a good role model by putting your trash in a wastebasket instead of in the yard, public parking lots or out the car window while speeding down the highway. Trash that litters our highways and public parking lots is disgraceful and should be embarrassing to us all.

Besides, many of these items could be recycled. Just ask the kids. I bet they can tell you how to go about it.

While you are spending time with your children, there are many more activities on the horizon to keep you and your children entertained throughout the rest of this week. Here are a few of them.

• 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday: free Spanish program at the Freeport Library, 410 Brazosport Blvd. Ideas on the Go! Vocabulary and social studies that teach busy parents what they can do to help students. Call (979) 730-7285, Ext. 11787. The library system puts on some awesome programs so don’t miss out on this one.

• 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday: This is a child safety seat checkup event that is a must for parents and grandparents at the Lake Jackson Police Department, 5 Oak Drive. More than 85 percent of child safety seats are installed incorrectly!

I have found it almost impossible to purchase a child safety seat, go out to the car and install the seat correctly no matter how many times I read the directions. To take advantage of this event you MUST bring your child and car safety seat with you and know his or her weight and height.

Call Courtney Latour of the Texas AgriLife Extension Service in Angleton at (979) 864-1558, Ext. 115. Latour is a certified safety seat inspector and will be able to answer your questions.

• 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday: Holy Comforter Episcopal School will host its Spring Fling at Angleton Middle School, 1001 W. Mulberry (Highway 35). The whole family can enjoy this event. There will be plenty of games and prizes for the kiddos, a fantastic live auction and tickets on sale for fabulous prizes including Wii and, Nintendo systems, four Schlitterbahn day passes and many more great items. Load up the kids and enjoy a day of great fun, food and something for everyone.

Mark your calendars and I hope to see you at one of these great events designed with parents and children in mind.
