LJ shooting suspect out of hospital, in jail

LAKE JACKSON — A man allegedly involved in a shootout with a Lake Jackson police officer last week could face up to life in prison if convicted now that attempted capital murder has been added to the list of charges against him.
Leyton Douglas Baugh, 28, was transferred at 11:50 a.m. Monday to the Brazoria County jail from Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, where he had been recovering from a gunshot wound.
Baugh was injured on July 30 at an apartment complex in the 400 block of Garland Drive after police said he ran from an officer trying to arrest him. He allegedly pulled a gun from the backpack he was carrying and shot at Officer Saul Soto, who police said returned fire, hitting Baugh in the chest.
Baugh had been under constant police surveillance while hospitalized, said Lake Jackson Police Chief Paul Hromadka.
The attempted capital murder charge was added Monday to the nine outstanding warrants Baugh has in Lake Jackson, said Brazoria County District Attorney Jeri Yenne.
Attempted capital murder is a first-degree felony.
“Investigations revealed that Baugh shot at the officer with intent to kill him,” Yenne said.
Soto, who was not injured, is on administrative leave while the Lake Jackson Police Department conducts a standard internal investigation into the shooting. Initial evidence supported the officer’s use of force, but a final decision is not possible until all evidence is gathered and evaluated, Hromadka said.
“I anticipate the investigation being complete by the end of the week,” Hromadka said.
In addition to the life sentence Baugh could receive from the attempted capital murder charge, he also is looking at more time if convicted of multiple other felony charges he faces.
The outstanding warrants include two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of robbery, three counts of endangering a child, one charge each of unauthorized use of a vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, and a misdemeanor charge.
All of those charges stem from one incident July 19 where Baugh is accused of assaulting two people by pointing a gun at them while children were in the room. During the same episode, he is accused of stealing money from a purse and leaving in a vehicle that did not belong to him.
Baugh also was indicted on a charge of possession of a firearm by a felon in July for a February incident in which he is accused of pointing a handgun at a Lake Jackson woman and threatening to kill her. At the time of the shooting he was free on a $25,000 bond on that charge.
He is being held on a total of $731,200 in bonds.
