ALVIN — An Alvin soldier died in Afghanistan after his vehicle struck a roadside bomb while they were conducting a convoy.
Army Sgt. James Nolen, 25, of Alvin, and Pfc. Marcus A. Tynes, 19, of Moreno Valley, Calif. died Sunday after the bomb exploded next to the vehicle, the Department of Defense announced Tuesday.
Both served as members of the 82nd Airborn Division.
“Sgt. Nolen was a true soldier,” fellow Paratroopers said in a press release from the 82nd Airborn Division. “Nothing could take away from his warm personality. His caring smile and willingness to help others was his most identifiable features."
Nolen is survived by his wife, Rachel Anne Nolen, his stepson William Flathman, his father Walter Nolen, his mother Kimberly Roberts and brothers John and Jeremy.
Nolen is the second person from Brazoria County to die in Afghanistan this year.
