Ball rolls over Angleton
Published November 25, 2009
ANGLETON — Galveston Ball’s full-court press was a bit too much Tuesday for the Angleton Wildcats, who dropped a 64-58 nondistrict decision.
The Wildcats (0-3), winless in the 2009-10 campaign, could not overcome the constant pressure of the Tors as Angleton finished with 22 turnovers in the game.
“We are young but I feel we are trying to progress every game,” first-year Angleton head coach Calvin Phillips said. “We had a bad game against (Clear) Brook, but came back and played (Clear) Creek better. We have an athletic team and all we have to do is play hard and compete, and if we can do that, we will win some ball games. Hopefully, by district we should be working a lot better.”
Both teams stayed close in the opening eight minutes of play as Galveston went 7-for-17 from the field to finish a bucket better than the Wildcats on the scoreboard, 18-16.
Dietrich Johnson tallied five points to lead the Tors, while Roger Nichols and Zalquan Lemons each scored five for the Wildcats.
But the continuous press finally got to Angleton in the second quarter when it committed eight turnovers just trying to get the ball past halfcourt. The Tors jumped on this opportunity, going on a 14-3 run with Evans and Marcus Ruiz leading the break.
Evans used his 6-foot-5 frame against the shorter Wildcats on the inside to get another six points in the second quarter.
Angleton’s misfire also got it in a hole, going 4-for-14 from the field and 0-for-2 from beyond the arc.
“We were out of place a lot against their press, but that just comes back to being young,” Phillps said. “This hurt us but this is also going to help us, especially once district rolls around.”
In the next couple of quarters, the Wildcats came within six points a couple of times, but never could get any closer.
Another source of concern for Angleton was its depth, going only six deep and having to keep starters on the floor for a majority of the game.
“Normally, we will play about eight players, but we will keep believing in them and let us see what the outcome will be,” Phillips said.
Lemons got hot in the third quarter, scoring 11 of the total 18 points for the Wildcats as he finished with 22. Eric Jefferson finished with 15 points for Angleton. Galveston was led by Johnson’s 16 points.
