Mavs’ night ends in disappointment

Published November 7, 2009

SANTA FE — Luck was on the Santa Fe football team’s side Friday night, and the Indians are in the playoffs for the third time in school history.

A three-way tie for the fourth and final playoff spot between Manvel, Santa Fe and Texas City was decided in the weight room at Earl Routh Jr. Field House just before 11 p.m. Friday via coin flip. Odd man out of the three coins earned the postseason berth.

It took two tries as the head coaches’ quarters all ended up tails after the first flip. On try two, Manvel and Texas City had heads, and Santa Fe was tails.

With the way the district standings panned out, Santa Fe head coach Jay Buckner wasn’t surprised there had to be two flips to determine the winner.

“I would have been absolutely shocked” if it ended after one, Buckner said. “In fact, I’m surprised we didn’t have to flip four or five times.

“After a loss, you go in there and have an unbelievable thing that just doesn’t happen, and there you are right back in it again,” Buckner said. “I don’t know if you can describe that feeling.”

It was a night of highs and lows for Manvel after its upset win over state-ranked Angleton on Friday got the Mavericks into the flip for the postseason berth.

“I take away from this that our kids beat the No. 3 team in the state and played their guts out,” Manvel head coach Kirk Martin said. “I’m proud of them and the way we finished the season and the kind of football team we have.”
