Fireworks to light up county skies

Published July 3, 2009

The burn ban in Brazoria County won’t prevent the skies from glowing in celebration this Fourth of July weekend.

Professional fireworks displays are scheduled in seven Brazoria County cities this weekend, many as part of larger events making the nation’s 233rd birthday. All are free.

“The sky will constantly be lit up with fireworks, so you don’t have to sit and wait on anything,” said Pastor Dale Frankum of Assembly of God Church in Brazoria, which is sponsoring the 16th annual Celebrate America on the grounds of Barrow Elementary School, which begins at 5 p.m. Saturday. The fireworks show follows the main event presentation, which starts at 8 p.m. Saturday.

But Freeport has the honor of hosting the first of the holiday’s big bangs. The Freeport Host Lions Club’s fireworks display, part of Fishin’ Fiesta, will be at 9:30 p.m. today at Freeport Municipal Park, 410 N. Brazosport Blvd.

“What’s better than sitting on the banks of the Brazos River and watching fireworks?” said Judge Milan Miller, a Lions Club member.

Lake Jackson’s fireworks display will begin about 9 p.m. Saturday at Dunbar Park. It will be the only display available in Lake Jackson because the use of fireworks within city limits is prohibited, Lake Jackson Fire Marshal Randy Crim said.

Highway 288 North at FM 2004 through to Lake Road at FM 2004 will be closed 10 minutes before the event until it ends as a safety measure, Crim said. The public is welcome to park in the Brazos Mall parking lot to watch the display, Crim said.

Before the fireworks, folks also can gather in the mall parking lot for a performance of the Community Choir, a combined effort of area churches and other groups. The “There is Freedom Here” concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

Danbury’s “Fourth on Main” celebration beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday will include several eating contests, providing refreshments courtesy of local churches and putting on live music before a fireworks show at dusk caps the day’s activities.

River’s End Volunteer Fire Department in Brazoria will put on a display for those interested in watching from their boats or the FM 2918 ramp. The show is set to begin at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, said member Gloria Powell.

As is customary, the Alvin Community College orchestra will have a patriotic concert building up to the city’s fireworks display on the college campus. The music starts at 7:30 p.m. with the display set to begin at 9 p.m.

Pearland will host a weekend-long, parking-lot carnival in the Pearland High School Stadium from noon to 10 p.m., an antique car show, VFW 21-gun salute at 7 p.m. and food and children’s activities will be available along with their fireworks display set to begin at dusk Saturday, Carry Watts of the Pearland Parks and Recreation Department said.

Just over the county line, Sargent’s annual Bam-Bam Jamboree starting at 9 a.m. at Caney Creek Pavilion will feature carnival games, vendors, auctions and a multitude of contests, committee member Sue Rash said. The day of fun will culminate with a 45-minute fireworks display at dusk, she said.
