Hospital celebrates 40 years
Published November 13, 2009
ANGLETON — Angleton Danbury Medical Center is giving help by bushel during a weeklong celebration of their 40th anniversary in the community.
The hospital’s “Week of Caring” events — with on-site events set for next Tuesday through Nov. 20 — are already under way, Angleton Danbury Medical Center spokeswoman Tonya Visor said. A food drive kicks things off Tuesday with a coat and blanket drive Wednesday, birthday celebration Thursday and a toy drive Friday.
Collections for the three drives already have begun, with the hospital giving 40 empty bushel baskets to be filled with food for the St. Thomas Center. Baskets are delivered to various businesses and people around town, and regardless of where baskets are, everyone in the community is encouraged to give, Visor said.
“Being a leader in our community means looking at ways to give back to the community and encouraging others to share their good fortune with those less fortunate,” Visor said. “The Angleton Danbury Medical Center team has planned a week of drives starting with a community food drive and ending with a community toy drive. In the middle of that, we’ll host our 40th birthday party.”
The need for food donations is more pronounced during the holidays, St. Thomas Center Director Mildred Wauson said.
“This event will provide food for many families in our community who otherwise would be unable to provide enough food for their family,” she said.
The three drives will be helpful to many organizations, said Stephanie Cone, executive director of the United Way of Brazoria County. Many students who attend Angleton and Danbury schools are classified as homeless, according to Bonnie Brothers, Angleton ISD liaison for the homeless. They include children of domestic violence, families who’ve lost their homes due to unemployment, or due to fires or other disasters, Brothers said.
The hospital’s drives will help take care of some of the needs of those families, Angleton ISD Superintendent Heath Burns said.
“As educators, we’re lucky to play such a large role in the lives of children,” he said. “However, with that huge honor comes the knowledge that many of our students and their families struggle financially. As a community, we can rally together to make a difference and to feed and provide warmth for as many families in our areas as possible.”
Angleton Danbury officials are happy to work with schools and other community organizations, and to use their anniversary as a reason to become more involved, hospital CEO Dave Bleakney said.
“We want to be able to share our community spirit by coordinating and providing a vehicle to give those in need a helping hand,” Bleakney said. “Our employees continuously give back to their community and to their co-workers. This week we will be a vehicle to reach further than our campus and encourage others to look at ways to share during the holidays.”
Next week’s events will be centered at the hospital, Visor said. Drop-off points are at the main entrance and motorists won’t have to leave their vehicles, Visor said. Thursday’s birthday celebration will be at the Professional Office Building auditorium.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a new toy to the birthday party. Those gifts will be added to Friday’s toy drive, Visor said.
