Ships decked

Published October 31, 2009

FREEPORT — Brazosport entered the District 24-4A season hoping to make a return trip to the playoffs. But Friday at Hopper Field, it was Friendswood that walked off the turf with a postseason berth secured.

The visiting Mustangs hammered the Exporters, 38-14, in Brazosport’s final home game of the season. The loss dropped the Ships to 3-5 overall and 1-5 in the district standings, with one game at Texas City left on the schedule.

Friendswood (6-3, 4-2) scored 57 seconds into the game and never trailed, keeping the Ships’ defense scrambling to keep up with its no-huddle offense.

“They got the momentum early and it just kind of got away from us,” Brazosport head coach Brian Welch said.

Mustang quarterback Peter Maetzold had a standout performance, completing 16-of-25 attempts for 232 yards and a touchdown. He also had a touchdown reception.

Dexter Brown was the Exporters’ offensive leader, rushing for 47 yards on 16 carries. He scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter and a 26-yard run in the fourth for Brazosport’s two touchdowns.

Though Brown had 47 rushing yards, the Exporters finished the game with just 26 positive yards on the ground.

Quarterback Kris Quiller passed for 81 additional yards and Orlando Lewis completed a 10-yard pass to give the Ships just 117 yards of total offense in the contest.

Friendswood held a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 21-7 edge at the half.

The Mustangs added a touchdown and a 30-yard Zach Hardy field goal in the third quarter. Both scored followed Exporter turnovers. Quiller was intercepted by Mustang Hunter Mcafee in Exporter territory to set up an Andrew Cole 10-yard touchdown run, and a bad snap with the Ships in shotgun formation resulted in a turnover and led to the field goal.

Friendswood took a 38-7 lead after Jonathan Johnson carried the ball 5 yards on the first play of the fourth quarter and Hardy followed with a successful point-after.

Brazosport’s Lewis returned the ensuing kickoff to the Mustang 30-yard line, and Brown broke free three plays later on his 26-yard run.

Kris Valenzuela was successful with his second PAT to wrap up the scoring in the game at the 10:14 mark of the fourth quarter.

Later in the quarter, Brazosport’s Brandon Hays was injured and appeared to have a broken femur, Welch said.

Hays left the field on a stretcher, giving the crowd a thumbs-up as he was wheeled off.

The Exporters already were without injured senior running back and offensive leader Gary Bivens, who watched the game from the sidelines.

“It definitely hurt us not having Gary and (injured senior lineman) Jose Torres in the lineup, but we still have a lot of guys capable of playing good football,” Welch said.

“We have one game left and we just have to go out and holds our heads up and perform.”
