Gun club hosting Field Day

Published September 6, 2006

BRAZORIA — In association with National Hunting and Fishing Day, the Greenwood Gun Club is hosting a field day for youth Sept. 23.

The event is planned from

9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Greenwood Gun Club rifle range, two miles east of Brazoria on FM 508. Activities are free to area youth, and participants will learn how to handle a firearm and a bow and arrow.

The club will have various shooting opportunities available.

“We’d like to give them some safety training, but also have them shoot long distance with a high power rifle,” membership director Charlie Robuck said. “There is a new group of people that will show up in full costume, dressed for cowboy action. These cowboys will be shooting cowboy pistols from the western days. We’ll have 22 rifles, pellet guns, air pistols with target spinners and archery.

“We are encouraging parents to come along and help set up the targets, and hopefully we can attract the kids to the 4-H Club and the parents to our club.”

The more than 50-year-old Greenwood Gun Club has a membership of 1,850, along with the On Target 4-H Clubs of Brazoria

County.

Representatives from Texas Parks and

Wildlife and Texas Youth Hunting Association will be on hand and will advise the public on how to get involved with conservation and hunting.

“All of these profits go to the 4-H Club. We are not trying to make anything out of this,” Robuck said.

“We buy the ammunition and we loan some of the firearms to the kids. We’ll also have a concession stand.”

Steve Wilson is one of several Greenwood Gun Club hunt masters who will be on hand to help. He’s been a hunt master for seven years and enjoys teaching the youth.

“We try to put the kids in situations where they must make certain decisions, so we’ll give them ethical questions,” Wilson said.

“For instance, would they shoot a dove sitting in a tree or flush it to make it fly away.”
