Kids’ products makers boost safety, comfort
Published March 18, 2009
Manufacturers are finally putting it all together when they develop new children’s products. First and foremost, they are doing their best to ensure that a product designed for baby is safe.
We are seeing more comfortable items for the baby and also those ergonomically designed for the parent’s comfort.
The safer, comfy baby items have included car seats, carriers, diaper bags and infant wear. The improved safety and comfort does come at a price, though, as you’ll see when you peruse the following Web sites.
There have been great strides made toward safer car seats with some having side-impact protection with steel alloy frames. I know the added safety makes the car seats much heavier to carry, but once properly installed in the car, Baby can be safely secured. A certified car seat inspector is at the Texas AgriLife Extension office in Angleton, (979) 864-1558, Ext. 115.
Four out of five car seats are improperly installed, so if you have any doubts about your car seat or its installation, please contact them. An example of these specially reinforced car seats can be found at Sunshine Kids Juvenile Products, www.skjp.com.
The baby carrier trend now is to carry baby on your back, front or hip using one of the more comfortable wraps, slings, mei tai or back-wearing frames. I am so glad to see parents keeping baby close to them instead of using the cold and distant hand-held carriers. To take a look at the carrier used by Julia Roberts, go to www.bellebabycarriers.com. I think you’ll like what you see.
Diaper bags with Dad in mind, finally. Some of the leather bags could be mistaken for a laptop carrier. The newer bags have more pockets and accessories for just about any item or occasion. To see the newest styles, visit www.lullabylane.com, www.joggermom.com and www.fleurville.com.
I am really impressed with the recent manufacturing of infant wear. The clothes are so soft and huggable because they are made from 100 percent organically grown cotton and no artificial dyes. This means less allergy potential for many children. Take a look at some of the infant wear at www.hess-natur.com, www.sagecreekorganics.com and www.lullabylane.com.
You can expect to pay more for these products because of the care and quality put into the construction. Many of these baby products were voted No. 1 Best Products for Mom and Baby in the “Pregnancy Presents” magazine for winter 2009.
We have been moving this direction for some time now to create safer, more comfortable products for baby and parents, but until the advertising gets out there it’s hard to know what’s available. When you are buying products for your baby, compare brands for quality and craftsmanship to make sure you’re getting the most for your money. Be a smart shopper.
