Post Office robberies connected

BRAZORIA — A mail truck driver loading his truck was robbed and locked in the vestibule at the Brazoria Post Office in an incident officials say is similar to a robbery that happened a week earlier.
Postal Inspections Office spokeswoman Manuella Bakker said the driver was working in a room between the dock and the back of the Post Office at 111 Gaines St. when someone pushed him to the ground from behind.
“He was locked in the vestibule, the suspect obtained keys from his body and locked him in,” Bakker said. “The suspect told the driver not to get up and not to look out until the truck was gone.”
The truck driver was not injured in the robbery, which happened about 5:15 p.m. Saturday, she said.
The incident is similar to one April 18 at a Post Office in Beasley, near Rosenberg, when a mail truck driver was forced to the ground by a black man in his mid-20s, who was about 6 feet tall and had a medium build, he told authorities. The suspect had short hair and wore khaki pants and a collarless shirt, Bakker said.
In the Beasley robbery, a semi-automatic gun was shown to the driver but was not used. The suspect drove away with an undisclosed amount of money in the truck.
Nothing was taken from the truck in the Brazoria robbery, Bakker said.
The truck was found about half an hour after the robbery at a gas station two blocks away, Brazoria Police Officer Linsy Longbotham said.
“He rummaged through the back of the truck,” she said. “We secured both scenes until the postal inspectors got there.”
The suspect apparently was looking for money, as was the case with the Beasley robbery, Bakker said.
“The good thing is, if we catch the suspect, we’ve got the guy from both robberies,” Bakker said.
