Lazard’s 5 TDs power Dawson over Stingarees

Published October 31, 2009

PEARLAND — The Pearland Dawson Eagles knew exactly what they needed to do Friday night, and wasted know time showing they would do it as they trounced Texas City 34-14 at The Rig to set up an interesting finale in District 24-4A.

With the win, Dawson improved to 4-2 in district play and 7-2 overall. The Eagles will finish up at Santa Fe next week and have a chance to finish either second or third in district. Right now, they are tied with Friendswood (4-2, 6-3), but the Mustangs defeated Dawson in Week 7.

Friendswood will end the season by hosting La Marque.

The Eagles, who were celebrating the first senior night in school history with 28 seniors on the squad, did not disappoint, especially Utah Ute-bound Darian Lazard.

On Dawson’s second drive of the night, Lazard conducted an eight-play, 42-yard drive he capped himself with a 2-yard score with 2:14 left in the first period.

The Eagles got the ball in Texas City territory on that drive when Sting punter Sam Martin shanked a 19-yard punt.

After Texas City responded with a touchdown on its next drive to tie the game, 7-7, it was all Dawson.

The Eagles came right back and put together a nine-play, 60-yard drive to retake the lead. Again it was Lazard who showed his elusiveness and speed as he went in untouched from 16 yards out. After the extra point by Stuart Watkins, the Eagles were up for good at 14-7.

Texas City (2-4, 3-5), which still has an outside chance at grasping the fourth spot in the district for the playoffs, had nothing for Dawson the rest of the way.

In the first half, the Stings totaled 108 yards, but more importantly had nine penalties for 52 yards. Most of those stopped would-be drives for Texas City.

Lazard showed his touch right before the half when on third and 10 he lofted a pass to Akeem Blackshire who was all alone for a 14-yard score. The score, capped by another Watkins kick, resulted from another methodical drive by the Eagles that covered 44 yards ina dozen plays.

Lazard finished with 71 yards on the ground in the first half to go with a 9-for-16 for 101 yards and one touchdown through the air.

In the third period, Lazard scored his third touchdown of the night on a 26-yard run — again going in untouched.

He then connected with Marcus Vaughn for a 5-yard touchdown in the third period to finish out the scoring for the Eagles. He added another 63 passing yards in the second half to finish with 163 passing yards and 109 yards on the ground on 16 carries.
