Marching bands ready for UIL
Published October 20, 2009
CLUTE — Buc Band members are walking with a little more pep in their step as they prepare for today’s UIL competition after bringing home the first-place trophy from this year’s Lone Star Preview.
Saturday’s competition featured some of the best bands from the Houston area and around Texas, Brazoswood High School Band Director Jim Koch said. The marching Bucs received a superior rating to earn first place for the third consecutive year.
“They’re just unbelievable,” Principal Steve Snell said. “Week after week, year after year they keep bringing in awards.”
The Lone Star Preview featured 24 bands, including Alvin High School and Brazosport High School, neither of which advanced to the finals.
“A lot of really good bands were there,” Koch said.
The judges at The Woodlands-based competition were some of the best in the nation, he said.
“To be picked first by them was such an honor,” Koch said.
This year, the marching band is playing songs from “Swan Lake” and “Edward Scissorhands.”
This was the band’s third competition this season. The band did well at each competition and improved every time, said Jeff Gilbert, the band booster club president and father of two band members.
“It was really exciting and exhilarating,” said Heather Wade, junior flutist for the band. This was a big accomplishment for the band, she said.
Paul Winniford, senior sousaphone player, also was excited to win a competition against other great marching bands, he said.
Now the Buc Band and other area squads, including Angleton, Alvin, Manvel and Brazosport, have turned their attention to today’s University Interscholastic League regional competition in Dickinson.
This is the Buc Band’s 29th year to attend the UIL competition, and band members are hoping they do really well, Koch said. Though they are hoping for a good rating, because 4A and 5A schools alternate the years each class can advance to the state level, the 5A Bucs can go no further than the regional competition this year.
However, the Angleton, Manvel and Brazosport bands, all Class 4A schools, are hoping to move on to the area area round this weekend.
The Brazosport High School band also has participated in other competitions before today’s UIL competition, said Jerry Crummel, Brazosport High School band director. The band has used the critiques from those competitions to improve and is hoping for a superior rating today, he said.
Angleton’s Purple Pride has done well in its pre-UIL competitions, and its members are excited to prove their worth at today’s competition, said band director Ronald Todd.
Though Brazoswood High School’s band cannot advance this year, they have one more competition in which they hope to bring home the top prize.
The Bands of America Super Regional competition is this weekend and showcases the best bands in the state, Koch said.
“It’s the ‘who’s who’ of bands in Texas,” he said.
After the event, the marching band’s competitive season will be at an end, but the marching band will continue to showcase its talent at the football games.
“It’s been a great year with beautiful music and a great show,” Gilbert said.
