Class of '74 turns back clock at reunion

Published October 25, 2009

Members of the Brazoswood Class of 1974 held their 35-year reunion over the Labor Day weekend. More than 250 people were in attendance, including both local residents and those who traveled from both U.S. coasts and many points in between.

The ’74 seniors were the first class to graduate from Brazoswood High School after attending during all four freshman-through-senior years. Classmates happily reunited after not having had a class gathering for 15 years.

Festivities kicked off on Friday evening at the Freeport Community House, with festoons of balloons and karaoke provided by David Odom of Lake Jackson. The reunion had its big finish on Saturday evening at Bridge Harbor with dinner and a DJ dance. Features both nights included: a Power-Point slide show prepared by Laurie Smith Groth of Angleton, with assistance from Sandy Bartlett Gouldthorpe of Atlanta, Ga.; banners on the rockin’ pirate theme and featuring “mini-portraits” of class members; pirate hats, a pirate flag and a pirate chest; issues of the ’70s Silver Sabre high school newspaper, class yearbooks and classmates’ scrapbooks; and megaphones, football booster ribbons and various other ’70s Buc memorabilia.

Reunion instigators were twin sisters Diane Darby English of Carrollton and Denise Darby Langenhop of Plano. Emcee was Tica Herns Massey of University Park. Other reunion organizers included Janet Dirba Gipson of Lake Jackson, Georgia Van Norman Truitt of Rosharon, Karen Mossier Norris of Houston and Susie Wascom Wassan of Baton Rouge, La.

Larry McIver of Escondido, Calif., was awarded the “Big Buc Spirit Stick,” after making the long and arduous trip by van. When asked to share his thoughts about the reunion, Larry said, “I have to say it far exceeded my expectations. I expected it to be fun, and I have to say it was the most fun I have had in a long time. They say you can’t recapture your youth. But for a few brief hours at the reunion, I was transported back 35 years. It was amazing how some people didn’t seem to age at all!

“I also have to say what beautiful women, inside and out,” McIver said. “They say Texas women are among the best. The overall feeling I got from the reunion was one of love and acceptance.”
