QUESTION: Why have the contractors working on Phase 1 of the construction between Lake Jackson and the south edge of Clute decided to leave the regular speed limit of 50 mph rather than to reduce the speed limit to 40 or 45 mph and to post signs warning of double fines for exceeding those reduced limits? It appears they also left all 19 of the existing crossovers and eight traffic signals other than at Oak Drive/Oak Drive South in place until preparing approaches to overpasses.
ANSWER: Thanks for asking. Right now work that is being conducted is far enough away from existing traffic that there is no need to reduce the speed limit. There are “double fines” signs posted at each end of the job. In the next phase, the environment will be different in that we will reduce a lane and the speed limit will be adjusted at that time. We later will reduce the number of crossovers and signals.
