Danbury, Sweeny chasing state berth

Published November 6, 2009

Runners from Sweeny and Danbury will attempt to continue their cross-country season Saturday at their respective Class 3A and 2A regional meets.

The Sweeny Lady Bulldogs won a district championship for the first time in 16 years when they captured the 26-3A title. Now the team has an opportunity to get to the advance to the state meet Nov. 14 in Round Rock.

But first comes the region meet at Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio where the girls will run at 12:50 p.m.

Julia Urdiales finished in second place at the district meet with a time of 13 minutes, 5.74 seconds to lead the Lady Bulldogs. But close behind her in third place was teammate Marrisa Marshall in 13:08.12.

Also running for the Lady Bulldogs are Meagan Davis (13:50.09), Katy Canchola (14:43.09), Stephanie Koehnlechner (14:47.09), Jessie Webb (15:53.69) and Sam Kuykendall (16:06.73).

The only Sweeny boy to qualify for regionals was Kenneth Woodard. He made the final cutoff position and finished in 10th place in 18:02.02. The boys race starts at 1:10 p.m.

Danbury qualified both the boy and girl teams at their District 29-2A meet at LeTulle Park in Bay City with third-place finishes.

“Both the boys and girls ran season-best times at district this year,” Danbury cross-country coach Terri Adams said. “We’ve improved a lot and have hit it pretty hard.”

The Panthers only have one senior on the squad. Sophomore Adan Hernandez leads the pack at 18:49. Next in line is freshman Ramiro Barron (21:13), Michael Ryan (22:00), Juan Ayala (22:12), Ismael Ayala (22:15), Quade Menard (23:19) and Nicholas Peltier (25:19).

“On the boys side, I am pretty confident both Adan and Ramiro can hold their own on the top half of the run,” Adams said. “Ramiro is a first-year runner and came out for the district meet. So far he is like a house on fire because he is keeping up with everybody. This week we worked on the bleachers and did some grass work as well.”

The Panthers run at 12:20 p.m.

The Lady Panthers are led by Britiany Bailey, who finished in 13:50 at the district meet.

“If Britiany wants it bad she will do it,” Adams said. “She is one of those kids you love to have because she is going to compete no matter what. Her goal is lower 13s or higher 12s.”

Also making the trek with Bailey are Tanya Lisbey (16:07), Abigail Andrade (16:39), Korissa Muniz (17:33), Courtney Hairston (17:41) and Holly Scott (18:12).

“This course is rated one of the hardest in Texas next to Texas Tech,” Adams said. “But this is an advantage to most of these kids because they’ve run it before. For the girls, this will be their third trip to the region meet.

The girls run at noon.
