WEB FIRST: Firefighter hurt at Danbury blaze
Published October 23, 2009
DANBURY — A Liverpool firefighter was hurt fighting a house fire Friday afternoon when she was hit in the head as she tried to adjust another firefighter’s air tank.
Kelly Balhorn was trying to shift the tank around in a holster when a sitting firefighter stood up and hit her in the head. She collapsed as firefighters and other emergency personnel walked her away from the fire.
Emergency officials took her to Angleton Danbury Medical Center as a precaution, Danbury Assistant Fire Chief Scott Osborn said.
“She was treated and released and already on the way home,” Osborn said.
The fire started about 1 p.m. Friday at a manufactured home in the 100 block of CR 210. Firefighters originally went inside the home to battle the blaze, but quickly came out, Osborn said.
“We were pulling down the ceiling and it started to collapse,” Osborn said. “I didn’t want to hurt anybody, so we pulled out.”
Firefighters waited until after they pulled out before they started spraying foam and water on the blaze, Osborn said.
The blaze was out at about 5 p.m.
Firefighters responded to the home on CR 210 just minutes after putting out a small fire in a home in the 100 block of CR 848, Danbury Police Chief Vincent Hatthorn said.
“We were just rolling up our hoses and putting everything up,” Osborn said.
The cause of the first fire is undetermined, and Osborn said the cause of the fire on CR 210 is still under investigation.
