BAL workshop to explore oil painting

Published May 13, 2009

CLUTE — Houston artist Steve Parker will be the instructor for a two-day Brazosport Art League course, “Oil Painting Workshop: Landscape Into Art.

It will be 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the league’s studio at The Center for Arts and Sciences, 400 College Drive in Clute.

The fee is $150 for art league members, $175 for non-members. A $50 nonrefundable deposit is required.

In this class, students will make paintings using their sketches, photographs from nature and memory. From there, participants will seek a sense of abstraction. While guiding students through these concepts, Parker will help work out technical problems as they arise.

Parker was born into a family which respected art and music. Deeply passionate about his landscapes, Parker conveys his understanding of nature its depth, its moods and its ever-changing aspects to a broad and appreciative audience.

After graduating from Texas Art Academy, Parker worked as a staff artist for the Houston Post. At that time he began studying under Lajos Markos, where he developed a strong appreciation for contemporary realism.

“I am continually fascinated with the fleeting effects of light and shadows observed while working outdoors and constantly exploring these tonal relationships and changing color perceptions,” Parker says.

Parker works in his studio from part memory and part observation, and his landscapes evoke in the viewer the feeling of having remembered a place once visited. The visual space of the painting entices one to imagine the changing light and atmosphere on a pond or a sudden mysterious ray of light across a clearing.

Parker is currently teaching landscape and still life painting at the Art League of Houston and exhibits at the Jack Meier Gallery, as well as other galleries in the Southwest.

In recent years Parker has continued to travel and paint in such locations as the Northwest coast of Washington, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico. He recently made trip to Italy to further study the classical Italian masters.
