Alcala, Webb, Filippi featured in art show

CLUTE — Artists from Clute, Freeport and Lake Jackson are featured in the current Brazosport Art League exhibit, “Pinceladas ... del Alma” (“Brush Strokes From the Soul.”)
The show, sponsored by BASF and featuring paintings in watercolor, acrylic and oil, remains on display through July 5 at The Center for the Arts and Sciences in Clute. It features Lillie Alcala of Clute, Raquel Webb of Freeport and Gloria Filippi of Lake Jackson.
Alcala has images reminiscent of her many visits to San Miguel del Allende, and other parts of old Mexico, West Texas and of her plein-air paintings recently done while with a group of BAL paint-in artists in Wimberley.
“Though words express so little of what the heart would say, heart, mind and hand can create many beautiful works of art — recollections of moments of laughter and contentment, tenderness, sadness, fear and anger,” Alcala says.
Alcala’s family moved to the Brazosport area in 1960. She has served the Brazosport Art League as a member, worker and officer. For 30 years, she has provided art instruction at her home studio, in community youth programs and at area schools.
“I have worked in all mediums, but must admit a preference for acrylics, which I adopted out of necessity while raising four children,” Alcala says.
She has been honored at the BAL’s People’s Choice show for two straight years, taking first in 2008 and third in 2009.
Webb says she was hired by a Surfside store for a part-time job after retirement.
“It was an interesting place with a great view of the Gulf of Mexico,” Webb says. “There were many visitors — fishermen, surfers and tourists, each with a story to tell. The view and the colors were so magnificent that I kept a journal and sketchbook to record my impressions.”
Once she discovered the art league, she received the help she needed to act upon her inspirations. She says she’s indebted to many members and instructors.
“Dot Salisbury taught me how to render skies and clouds,” Webb says. “Sally Webster showed me how to mix greens and paint banana leaves. Reba Bonorden corrected my drawings and spelling. Betty Klasel and Karin Veazey and all the other members gave and continue to give me feedback and encouragement.
“My favorite medium is watercolor for the spontaneity and translucence of the colors,” says Webb, who was born in Mexico. “I ask God to grant me the perseverance and endurance of Grandma Moses. She finished her last painting at the age of 101!”
Filippi says, like Webb, she became interested in painting later in life.
“I … was influenced artistically by my father. He had enjoyed painting in his retirement and many of his works were on the walls of his house,” Webb says.
She took lessons with Julia Crainer through Brazosport College, then an encounter with her friend, Webb, resulted her in returning to the art league’s weekly paint-ins.
She says her instructors included Dot Salisbury, Doris Munson, Cecilia LaValle, Betty Klasel and Judy Courtright. She also took lessons in new mediums with Dolores Reynolds and Sherry Shelton — all through the Brazosport Art League.
“Today I take pleasure in reflecting on canvas what I see in life, learning more about the art of painting and sharing my works with others,” Filippi says.
The Center for Arts and Sciences is at 400 College Drive in Clute. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 2 to 5 p.m. Sundays. For information, call (979) 265-7971.
