Jimenez, Maguire run to 1st-place finishes

Published November 1, 2009

ANGLETON — A perfect morning for a race blessed the inaugural Most Holy Trinity Church Fun Run as Brazoswood and Angleton cross-country runners posted benchmark times for future races.

On the 3-mile course through residential Angleton, Brazoswood High School freshman Xavier Jimenez, 15, took a decisive lead from the start and crossed the finish line in 17 minutes, 32 seconds, a 5:51-mile pace.

“I could hear footsteps behind me in the first mile, but after I took off at about a mile and a half, I didn’t hear them,” Jimenez said. “I did take a wrong turn and lost about 20 seconds.”

Cesar Calderon, 37, finished second overall in 20:12, 2:40 behind Jimenez.

“My first mile was comfortable,” Calderon said. “I wasn’t trying to run with Xavier. I’ve seen his pace. This was only my second race, and I improved my time by almost a minute.”

Running his first race, Angleton High School student Matthew Jewell, 14, outsprinted classmate Stephen Horton, 15, at the end of the race to finish third overall in 20:23, 6 seconds in front of Horton.

“We were together right until the end,” Jewell said. “I didn’t do as well as I thought I would; I could have gone faster.”

“I stopped to get water, and that slowed me down,” Horton said. “When I stopped, I couldn’t catch up because I was tired.”

Rachel Maguire, 15, an Angleton High School cross country-runner and trackster, finished 14th overall and first in the female competition in 26:46, an 8:55-mile pace. Maguire ran her first 5K because high school girls run only 2 miles in meet competition.

“I went out too fast on the first mile, but I wanted to win first in the girls’ competition, so I was motivated,” Maguire said.

Only 14 seconds behind Maguire, Andelena Castillo, 28, of Angleton, surged ahead of Tiffany Mixon, 29, of Lake Jackson to claim second place in the female competition by 6 seconds. Castillo and Mixon finished 16th and 17th overall, respectively, in 27:00 and 27:06.

“She (Mixon) was pretty far ahead of me, but at 21⁄2 miles, I went for it,” Castillo said. “I then tried to catch up with the people in front of me.”

“I did pass her (Castillo) toward the end of the race, but then she passed me,” Mixon said.

The top three male and female finishers and all runners 18 and younger received medals.

The inaugural fun run was a prelude to the Most Holy Trinity Church Bazaar scheduled today. The idea for the run developed from bazaar steering committee, according to Pastor Bob Daggan.

“Father Daggan approached me because I did a half marathon although I am not that big a runner,” parishioner Anna Kocurek said. “We had a lot of runners who have never run. It was awesome and exciting to see the participation of all the young runners.”

More than 70 runners and walkers finished the course.

Parishioner Glenn LaMont helped plan the run and wants to expand it next year.

“We plan to have the course (USA Track and Field) certified for next year and give age group awards like all of the other races,” LaMont said.

In the spirit of Halloween, Guillermina Silva, 49, and Manuel Moreno, 57, who ran last week’s Monster Dash dressed as mustard and ketchup, ran the Most Holy Trinity course dressed as Tinkerbell and Captain Hook.

“It is Halloween, after all,” Silva said.

Individual and corporate sponsors paid all race expenses, and all race registration proceeds went into the Most Holy Trinity bazaar fund.

Sponsors were Angleton Visiting Nurses, Elva Gutierrez, owner;

J & M Custom Screen Printing of Angleton; and the Most Holy Trinity Stewardship Committee of Felix and Estee Gonzales, Fred and Helen Infante, Arturo and Sylvia Munoz, Sandra and Keith Mouton and John Berger.
