Samaritan becomes victim of hit-and-run

Published October 6, 2009

ANGLETON — Tyler Lowe was on the way to a friend’s house when he saw his parents’ car at the rainy scene of an automobile crash near Three Bridges.

After calling his brother, the 22-year-old Angleton man learned his father had stopped to help — only to become a victim of a hit-and-run driver. His father was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, Marcus Lowe told his brother.

“I was home waiting to cook fish for supper Saturday and decided to go to a friend’s house,” Tyler Lowe said. “I saw all the lights and looked back and saw my parents’ car and said, ‘What’s going on?’ I never thought I’d see him like that.”

Alan Lowe, 50, of Angleton was driving north on Highway 288-B south of Angleton about 8:20 p.m. Saturday when he noticed a flash inside a vehicle beside him. The vehicle rolled to a stop in the left lane, and Alan Lowe pulled his Ford Focus onto the shoulder to help the woman driving, Tyler Lowe said.

“He was concerned about the girl,” Tyler Lowe said. “He and my mom were driving beside her and her car just shut down. He was worried her car might catch on fire. It was raining pretty hard and he pulled over to help her.”

Alan Lowe and the driver of the disabled vehicle, Desiree Miller, were standing beside the car, still in the left northbound lane, when a red pickup side-swiped the vehicle and hit them both, Tyler Lowe said.

His mother, Cheryl Lowe, a registered nurse at Angleton Danbury Medical Center, saw the crash and ran to help both victims.

“My mom said the truck swerved into the left median but it hit the side of the car and folded the door back,” Tyler Lowe said. “They both went into the median — my dad and the girl. (The driver) pulled up and stopped. My mom was giving first aid to my dad and witnesses said the truck was driving off.”

Cheryl Lowe didn’t have a description of the red pickup, but Department of Public Safety Sgt. David Janek said police hope the public can give some information about the truck and its driver.

Both Miller and Alan Lowe were taken by ambulance to Brazosport Regional Health System in Lake Jackson, then driven by ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. Medical helicopter flights were grounded because of the weather.

Alan Lowe was in critical condition and Miller good condition Monday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Alan Lowe was sedated and had not regained consciousness Monday evening. He has broken ribs, internal bleeding, a “shattered” left hip and has undergone surgery to remove fluid from his lungs, Tyler Lowe said.

Amber McNutt and her husband, Darren, of Clute are friends of the Lowe and Miller families and hope someone comes forward with information.

“I’d like to see if anybody knows anything,” Amber McNutt said. “It just doesn’t seem right that somebody can get away with that.”

Employed at Ineos Chocolate Bayou plant, Alan Lowe seemed to be responding to treatment Monday but he’ll likely need several surgeries, Tyler Lowe said. Aside from some family members coming home briefly Sunday for a change of clothes, loved ones have had been at Alan Lowe’s bedside at Memorial Hermann since Saturday night.

They’ll be by his side for as long as it takes, Tyler Lowe said.

“He’s on a breathing machine and they’re going to wean him off it to see if he can start breathing on his own,” he said. “They’re waiting for his condition to get better so they can work on his ribs.”

Anyone who may have information on the crash is asked to call Trooper Manuel Cantu at 979-233-7398.
