Sweeny looks to shore up playoff spot

Published October 30, 2009

SWEENY — The Sweeny Bulldogs can clinch a spot in the playoffs today with a win, and they hope to pull that off in a key District 26-3A contest against the Brookshire Royal Falcons.

Sweeny (3-0 district, 6-2 overall) and Royal (3-0, 4-4) will square off at 7:30 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium. The teams are both undefeated in league play and the winner will clinch at least a share of the district title.

“Brookshire is already is in the playoffs no matter what happens,” Sweeny head coach Tommy Zajicek said. “We haven’t clinched anything yet, and right now there are three of us fighting for three spots — Sweeny, Wharton and Needville.”

A loss by Wharton to Columbia on Friday and a Sweeny win will clinch playoff berths for Sweeny, Royal and Needville.

The Bulldogs are trying to win a second consecutive district championship and go unbeaten in league play in back-to-back seasons. Sweeny scored an important 28-6 win over Needville last week.

“Anytime you beat a good Needville team, it is always a confidence builder,” Zajicek said. “But you always have to come in prepared whenever you face them. We don’t get to relax though because (today) will be the most talent and speed we will face this year.

“They’ve got (Shane) Alexander at wide receiver who has been a thorn in our side since he was a freshman,” Zajicek said. “He’s played some at quarterback, wide receiver and is just an excellent athlete.”

Alexander is the top rated receiver in the district with 41 catches for 606 yards and two touchdowns.

“Another one is Brandon William, who runs the 100 meters in 10.5 seconds — now that is fast,” Zajicek said. “He has real good feet and is tall at 6-foot-1, 190 pounds.”

Williams has 1,002 rushing yards and eight touchdowns and has 334 receiving yards with three more scores.

Royal quarterback Eric Matthews comes in with 1,283 passing yards on 102 completions with seven touchdowns and six interceptions.

The Falcons top the district on offense and average 366.9 yards a game.

Sweeny also has some big weapons, including tailback Jamell Woodard (150 carries, 1,005 yards, 14 touchdowns) and quarterback Tré Lemon (42-for-79 passing, 691 yards, six touchdowns).

“I think we’ve been more consistent since (district) started,” Zajicek said. “What you hope happens is that every week you get better or someone can catch up with you.

Sweeny ranks second in the district in offense (306.9 yards a game) and defense (234.6 yards a game).
