Early voting begins Monday
Published October 17, 2009
ANGLETON — When the Alvin Yellowjackets host Clear Springs in football Friday, the scoreboard operator won’t be the only person keeping an electronic tally. Brazoria County residents at the game also can help decide whether to pass one of four local bond elections and 11 state constitutional amendments on the Nov. 3 ballot.
Early voting begins Monday in 10 voting locations throughout the county and continues through Oct. 30, Brazoria County Elections Director Janice Evans said. As with all early voting the past three years, any registered voter can vote at any early voting site, Evans said.
Early polling sites will be in Alvin, Angleton, Brazoria, Brazosport College, Freeport, Manvel, East Pearland, West Pearland, Sweeny and West Columbia.
“If you’re eligible to vote, you should be able to vote at any of them,” she said.
That includes Alvin ISD voters who are being asked to approve $70 million in bonds to be put toward a $112 million package to build two elementary schools and a middle school, and purchase land and design work for the district’s third high school. The rest of the money will come from previously approved bonds.
“Mobile voting” will take place in 22 Alvin ISD locations, plus normal early voting.
Mobile voting sites are listed at the Brazoria County Web site, www.brazoriacountyvotes.com. Alvin is the only voting district using mobile voting, and this election is the first time Brazoria County has accommodated mobile voting, Evans said.
“In mobile voting, we have additional early voting locations opening for two hours at various events at Alvin ISD,” Evans said. “They have one at an open house, during report card pickup — 22 different ones. It’s a joint venture with the county and the school district.”
Elsewhere in the county, Brazosport ISD is seeking $166 million to build two new schools, add classrooms and gyms as well as fund maintenance. Danbury ISD is seeking $8.9 million to complete a second floor for the middle school, addition of a classroom and cafeteria wing to the elementary school and a multi-use athletic facility.
Manvel city officials hope for $2.5 million to house a new library and city offices.
Constitutional amendments include a measure protecting access to public beaches by blocking developers from restricting beach access; A proposal to tax property based only on value as a home and not at a commercial use value; Set uniform standards for property appraisals; Allow consolidation of property appraisal boards; and a measure allowing members of the Texas State Guard or other state military force to hold civil offices.
Election worker training began last week and wrapped Saturday, Elections Clerk Tricia DeVille said. All positions are filled for early and Election Day voting, she said.
“We’ve filled all of our spots and feel like everything is ready for early voting,” DeVille said.
Mail-in ballots are accepted from people unable to make it to the polls, or for military personnel overseas. Requests for a by-mail ballot should be made to County Clerk Joyce Hudman, 111 E. Locust, Suite 200, Angleton, TX 77515. Requests must be received by 5 p.m. Oct. 27.
