Gift of Art, silent auction benefits Habitat
Published November 5, 2008
CLUTE — Have you been looking around for that special gift? A gift that is really unique, one-of-a-kind and out-of-the-box — but that won’t put you in debt for the rest of the year?
Well, look no further. The Brazosport Art League has gifts for Christmas giving or a special treat for yourself, as well as an easy way to support Habitat for Humanity of Southern Brazoria County.
This is the 11th year the Brazosport Art League has partnered with the Brazoria County Woodcarvers Club, and the Brazosport Woodworkers Guild in donating works to be used in the Gift of Art and Silent Auction, which is under way and continues until 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7 in the gallery at The Center for Arts and Sciences.
The opening reception for the GOA and Silent Auction will be 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the center, 400 College Drive in Clute. The event is sponsored by The Source and owner Lisa Baker.
All proceeds from the sales of items donated from members of the three organizations go to the Habitat chapter to help build better, more affordable housing in Brazoria County. Last year, there was enough money accumulated from the silent auctions in past years to build a house.
The house, in the 800 block of Godfrey in Clute and built by volunteers, was dedicated April 15, 2007, as “The House That Art Built.” At the time the 59th house built by Habitat in southern Brazoria County, it is home to Raul Aguilar and his wife, Martha, and their sons, Erick and Raul Jr.
Mary Ruth Rhodenbaugh, former Habitat director, said, “The house was specially dedicated to the Brazosport Art League, the Brazoria County Woodcarvers Club and the Brazosport Woodworkers Guild, because of the work they do every year with the silent auction held during BAL’s annual Gift of Art exhibit.”
Joe Morris is an art league member who is a frequent worker in charge of plumbing at the building of the Habitat houses. He has made and donated 23 3-D clay works of art to the silent auction this year. Morris said he started making clay animals and other sculptures in 1997.
Magnus Hjalmarson, featured oil artist in the BAL exhibit “Coast to Coast,” donated one of his beautiful impressionistic oil paintings, “Goliad Church,” to the silent auction, saying he is always happy to help a really worthwhile cause, and knows that someone will give his painting a good home.
While the silent auction is going on, the BAL also is having “The Gift of Art” exhibit featuring small paintings and 3-D art works by Brazosport Art League members areawide. These make perfect stocking stuffers and will remain up through Dec. 28. The works can be picked up at the time of purchase.
At the end of the silent auction, successful bidders will be contacted beginning Monday morning, Dec. 8. If you are called and the item is not picked up within three days, the next bidder will be contacted.
The art league gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, and 2 to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free. For information, call the art league gallery at (979) 265-7971.
