Church car show set for today

Published November 7, 2009

BRAZORIA — A gospel song can be uplifting, but officials with First Baptist Church in Brazoria hope the roar of a Corvette engine will have the same effect.

The church is having its fourth annual Cars, Choirs and Quilts Show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the church grounds at the intersection of Highways 36 and 332 in Brazoria.

Participants can stroll through rows of cars, including sports cars, hot rods, trucks and motorcycles.

“Model As to GTOs,” church pastor Mike Mills said. “We have 16 different classes of cars.”

There also will be rows of older quilts on display inside the church and three of the church’s music groups will perform throughout the day, he said.

“It started out as a classic car show,” Mills said, laughing.

Over the past few years, other events were added because church members felt it would expand outreach efforts, he said.

“We’re using it as an outreach ministry,” said Jenny Maus, the church’s music assistant. “We have fun, too.”

The event is free and free hot dogs, sodas and children’s games will be available during the event, Maus said.

The cars will start arriving at the church at about 8 a.m. and will be judged in 16 categories, including the best hot rod, sports car, truck, military vehicle and antique models, Maus said.
