Pickup, trash truck collide; 2 men hurt

Published March 18, 2008

ANGLETON — An accident involving a garbage truck and pickup Monday afternoon sent two men to the hospital and various parts of the vehicles scattered along the road and ditch where they came to rest.

Eluterio Salazar Jr., 57, was driving a Waste Management truck north on FM 523 about 3:15 p.m. when he attempted to turn left into a mobile home park outside Angleton. The driver of the pickup, a gold 2006 Ford F-250, was attempting to pass a car and the garbage truck when the pickup and Waste Management vehicle collided, Trooper Manuel Cantu of the Department of Public Safety’s Freeport branch said, citing witness statements.

Salazar was taken with head injuries by medical helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital, Cantu said.

The pickup’s driver was taken to Brazosport Regional Health System by Lake Jackson EMS, he said. Because the driver was taken to the hospital so soon after the accident, police did not have his name.

The vehicles both crossed the southbound lane of traffic before hitting a small tree close to a mobile home in the park, splitting it in half, he said.

Both men were wearing seatbelts and alcohol is not suspected as a contributing factor, Cantu said.
