Stay warm out on the golf course

Published November 6, 2009

The weather is getting cooler and the golf season is beginning to win down, but there still are plenty of chances to get out and play area courses before Old Man Winter comes blowing in.

There are plenty of ways to stay warm on the fairways.

One easy way is to limber up before your round. Hit a bucket of balls at the range and stretch things out before you approach the first tee.

Dressing in layers is another way to keep your body heat. Also, wear earmuffs or a hat and put on some gloves between strokes. It’s hard to grip a club when you can’t feel your fingers.

WEST BRAZOS: Play has been steady in Brazos as the lighted West Brazos Golf Center. There, you can stay on the lighted nine-hole, 3,402-yard course well past our now earlier sunsets.

At the centers ladies’ night scramble Monday, the team of Pat Roome, Chesney Sisson, Mary Gallant & Jenna Reid shot a 30 for a first-place finish and collected a pair of skins. FInishing two strokes behind was the foursome of Fay Burke, Jorja Holley, Ramona Shows and Phyllis Stedman. Finishing in third place, and winning one skin, was the group of Elizabeth May, Frances Smith, Mary Phillips and Jennifer Wilson.

Winning the Tuesday night men’s scramble with a 50, and grabbing one skin, was the threesome of Mark Finlay, Blaine Finlay and Keith Meyer. In second place, just a shot back, was the team of David Gonzales, Dave Perry, Robert Cox and Jeff Powell. Finishing third with a 52 was the group of Brandon Downs, Steve Sanders and Cecil Stedman.

On Oct. 30, Cox and Powell paired up to with the under the lights tournament with a 22.50.

A new season of the center’s Thursday night match play league, Dueling Wedges, is set to big. To register, vistit the course or call 979-798-4653.

ALVIN: The Alvin Golf and Country Club hosted it senior scramble Wednesday. Winning was the team of Sam Clark, Carl Adams, Gary Armstrong, Bill Robinson and Bud Frazier. Taking second place was the group of Don Meyer, Scott Lisenbe, Eddie Thielepape, Travis Hunold and Bill Majors. Finishing third was the fivesome of Dennis Bell, Dickey Kerr, John Williams, Ray Trapman and Lupe Pena.
