Police looking for men who took $3,000

Published November 6, 2009

FREEPORT — Authorities were searching Thursday for two men they say took an envelope containing $3,000 from an elderly man outside of a restaurant.

One man was black, about 5-feet-8, 160 pounds and wearing blue pants and a blue button-up shirt, while the second one was black, about 5-feet-5, 140 pounds and wearing light brown pants, with a shirt of an unknown color and eyeglasses, Freeport Police Lt. Steve Ricks said.

The 74-year-old Freeport man withdrew $3,000 from a bank in the 1400 block of Brazosport Boulevard at 11:30 a.m., which he had planned to use on a new riding lawnmower, Ricks said.

A bank teller put the money in an envelope and handed it to the man, who placed it in his shirt pocket.

The man then stopped at a restaurant in the 1200 block of Brazosport Boulevard, where he was approached by the two men, Ricks said.

The men asked for money to buy lunch and snatched the envelope from the shirt pocket when the man reached in his pants pocket for cash, Ricks said.

The men, who were described in their late 40s or early 50s, did not make any threats, nor did they display weapons, Ricks said. The men then walked away from the restaurant.

The elderly man reported the incident to police a short time later, Ricks said.

Police plan to check surveillance videos from businesses in the area in hope of catching the incident on camera, Ricks said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Freeport police at 979-239-1211.
