Parents recover 4-wheeler at gunpoint

Published July 9, 2009

BRAZORIA — A man accused of pulling a knife on two children and taking their four-wheeler was arrested after the children’s parents pulled a gun on him.

Daniel Garcia-Arcos, 19, of Houston was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, Brazoria County Sheriff’s investigator Nick Villalona said. He was taken to Sweeny Community Hospital with minor injuries suffered “while being detained” by the victims’ family and neighbors, according to a sheriff’s office press release.

About 7:40 p.m., an 11-year-old boy and 14-year-old girl were riding a four-wheeler along CR 244 near Brazoria when a pickup approached from behind, Villalona said.

“Apparently they weren’t happy with the way they were getting out of the roadway and stopped in front of them,” he said. “A Hispanic male jumped out and approached the juveniles. They attempt to turn around and get away, but the four-wheeler got stuck in a fence. The actor produced a knife and the juveniles took off running.”

The children’s home was a few hundred feet away, and their parents heard shouting. Garcia-Arcos reportedly begin riding away on the four-wheeler and the pickup truck was driven away by another person, Villalona said.

Armed with a shotgun and in their own truck, the parents caught the man and called deputies, Villalona said.

A woman in her 20s drove the pickup back to the scene to check on Garcia-Arcos, and she was apprehended along with a passenger, Villalona said. The woman and passenger were charged with public intoxication.

After being checked out at the Sweeny Community Hospital emergency room, Garcia-Arcos was taken to the Brazoria County jail, where he remained on $75,000 bond Wednesday evening, a jail spokeswoman said.

If convicted of aggravated robbery, Garcia-Arcos faces up to life in prison.
