County teams set for next round of playoffs

Published November 5, 2009

Heading into the area round of the volleyball playoffs, only Danbury, Pearland and Pearland Dawson remain playing from Brazoria County.

Danbury (21-9) will hit the court for the first time in the postseason in the Class 2A Region IV playoffs at 7:30 p.m. today in Schulenburg against Natalia (21-11) after getting a bye in the first round.

On Friday, Dawson (24-18) will play at 5 p.m. against Houston Washington (13-6) at Joe K. Butler Stadium and Pearland (25-7) will play at 8 p.m. in Manvel against Fort Bend Dulles (27-11).

The Danbury Lady Panthers got back on the court Monday after a turbulent week dealing with the death of two former students.

“We kind of took it slow last week, and on Monday when we came in we talked about certain things,” Danbury head coach Melissa Hansen said. “I read a passage to them about overcoming adversity. That kind of set the tone for Monday’s practice, and on Tuesday we had a great practice.”

Danbury was co-district champ with Industrial in District 29-2A and haven’t played since beating Boling in their regular season finale Oct. 27.

The last time the Lady Panthers won a district title outright was in 2002.

The Natalia Lady Mustangs finished third in District 31-2A and downed Riviera Kaufmann in three games, 25-17, 25-12, 25-19, in the bi-district round Tuesday. They were led by 5-foot-8 Sabrina Mendez with 22 kills. Mendez is averaging 18 kills a game.

“I know they run a unique defense, so we are going to have to find the holes,” Hansen said. “But the main thing for us is just working on our mental game. We have to keep things going because we fought hard to get here.”

Van Vleck or Freer will face the winner in the region quarterfinals.

The Dawson Lady Eagles entered their first playoff in school history and got their first win against El Campo on Tuesday.

Now the Lady Eagles face the War Eagles of Houston Washington in the Class 4A Region III area round.

Washington finished second in District 22-4A and beat Houston Austin, 12-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-20, on Monday in bi-district play.

“We’ve never seen a system like theirs,” Dawson head coach Lori McLaughlin said. “I don’t necessarily think they have a system. But whoever is lined up anywhere, that is where they play.

“We are going to go down a whole bunch of notches, but then we have to pick it up a whole bunch of notches as well.”

Dawson or Washington will face Friendswood or Houston Reagan in the next round.

Pearland won the District 22-5A championship and on Monday got by Baytown Lee in three games, 25-13, 25-12, 25-18, in the Class 5A Region III bi-district round.

Malorie Pardo led the Lady Oilers with 22 kills as Pearland advanced past the first round of the playoffs in three seasons.

Pardo has 357 kills for the year to lead the Lady Oilers.

Dulles beat Clear Creek in four games Monday and finished second in District 23-5A.

The winner faces Clear Lake or Deer Park in the regional quarterfinals.
