Storm sessions are worth your time

Published May 22, 2007

Howdy! If you have been listening to the media, you realize that next week begins the hurricane season. To get you ready for the season we are holding not one, but two hurricane seminars this year. Our traditional seminar at the Lake Jackson Civic Center will be May 31, and we are conducting a second seminar June 1 at the Alvin Community College.

Each program will be similar, but also will be localized to its respective community.

The exhibit hall opens at 3:30 p.m. each day and we have numerous exhibitors showing their products and services to protect life and property of coastal communities. From 4 to 6 p.m., we are conducting seven 20-minute breakout sessions:

• National Flood Insurance

• Texas windstorm inspection

• “What Can We Take?”

• 211 Telephone Network — “Can You Help With My Special Needs?”

• Status of levees

• “What Can We Do?”

• AARP personal evacuation plans

At 6:15 p.m. in Lake Jackson, we are going to present the poster contest awards to the school children who entered posters commemorating “The Perfect Storm” preparation workshop and what lessons they learned from Katrina and Rita.

The general session is at 6:30 p.m. with the presentation of Kevin Savoie on the lessons he learned and his experiences during Hurricane Rita. Mr. Savoie is the area agent of the Southwest Region Louisiana Sea Grant College Program and works out of Lake Charles.

After Savoie’s presentation, “Doc” Adams, Brazoria County emergency coordinator, will present the new evacuation plans for Brazoria County. Evacuation procedures have somewhat changed, and we think even those who have attended seminars in the past will get quite a bit out of this workshop.

After the two speakers, there will be panel of experts to answer questions from the audience. Not only will we have our local officials, but also Gene Hafele with the National Weather Service, representatives of a local hospital and the school district, and local emergency managers to answer your specific questions.

This is a good opportunity to learn about some of the new products to protect your home and also get the most up-to-date information on our evacuation plans. I feel it will be worth everyone’s while to attend at least the general session.

Before the seminar, take a youngster fishing. It will create great memories.

Rich Tillman is the Brazoria County marine agent. Contact him at (979) 864-1564, or e-mail richt(at)brazoria-county.com.
