LJ takes steps to put hydrant in service
Published November 17, 2009
QUESTION: The fire hydrant across from my house on Blossom Street in Lake Jackson has been out of service for more than six months. I seem to remember the city raising water and sewer rates a couple of months ago so they could better maintain these systems. How long until I can expect my hydrant to be fixed?
ANSWER: We had a report of a water leak on July 22 at the fire hydrant at 117 Blossom St. The leak might have been caused by the hydrant being struck by a vehicle. We determined the leak was small, so at that time we added it to the list of leaks and left the hydrant in service. The leak, while a nuisance would not interfere with its ability to be used as a fire hydrant.
We took the hydrant out of service Aug. 12 because a concerned resident called repeatedly about the leak. There were other hydrants in the neighborhood, at the corner of Blossom and Forest Drive and at the corner for Forest and Persimmon, that remained in service. Therefore, in consultation with the fire department, we elected to take this hydrant out of service until the leak could be repaired. In necessity, the hydrant could have been returned to service by opening a valve.
Because of the high volume of water leaks this summer, we still are catching up on repair of the smaller leaks. However, a crew was scheduled to be at this location Nov. 6 to repair the leak.
