Reception Saturday for ‘Gift of Art’

Published November 1, 2009

CLUTE — The reception for “The Gift of Art” and “Silent Auction 2009” will be 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the art gallery at The Brazosport Center for the Arts and Sciences.

The exhibit, sponsored by Brazoria County Pct. 4 Commissioner Mary Ruth Rhodenbaugh, opened to the public Tuesday and will remain on display through Jan. 3.

Twelve years ago, Rhodenbaugh conceived of the idea for a silent auction to benefit Habitat. Then the director for Habitat for Humanity of Southern Brazoria County, she contacted Orren Gaspard, administrator of The Center for the Arts and Sciences. Gaspard and then-Brazosport Art League President Laura Brandes helped launch the silent auction, which was held in conjunction with the art league’s “Gift of Art.”

That created a long-lasting partnership between the Brazosport Art League, the Brazoria County Woodcarvers Club and the Brazosport Woodworkers Guild. Together, they donate work for the silent auction, and all proceeds are donated to Habitat to help build additional affordable housing in Brazoria County.

This year, there are 85 items entered in the Gift of Art and 151 art works donated to the silent auction by the three groups. Gift of Art items can be taken at the time of purchase, however, silent auction items will remain on display until the end of the exhibit.

Among the items up for auction are 30 toys made by members of the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church Workshop, located at Westheimer and Edloe streets in Houston.

These items are brought in by Brazosport Art League member Sherry Tesch, who also is a member of the workshop and makes a point to attend their woodworking sessions in Houston at least once a month.

The workshop group comprises about 25 retired people who make toys and other items for different projects.

Tesch said the group made and provided 11,000 toys last year that were sent all over the world. The silent auction is one of the lucky recipients.

Art league member Adalia Maudlin painted a child’s stool; also painting some of the toys were Lillie Alcala and Reba Bonorden.

Art league member Joe Morris made 21 pieces of clay art, including an egret and heron, which he donated to this year’s silent auction.

Duane Koch, secretary of the Brazosport Woodworkers Guild, made a large doll bed for the auction, and his wife, Janet, made the bedding. They then had Lillie Alcala decorate the bed. Also up for auction is a beautiful clock-jewelry box made by Harold Wood.

The gallery is open to the public 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 2 to 5 p.m. Sundays, plus before Center Stages performances and during intermissions.

The Brazosport Center for the Arts and Sciences is at 400 College Drive in Clute. For information, call Sally Webster at 979-297-6313 or Marjorie Suggs at 979-299-6891.
