Can’t avoid gov’t ‘socialism’

Here is an idea for those who do not want a responsible government (not currently in power for the last 40 years) to do anything for them or anyone else — in other words, socalist programs.

Don’t drive or walk on government right of way. Don’t use public schools. Don’t use public utilities. Don’t use hospitals, buses, trains or planes. Don’t work anyplace other than a farm that does not export its products beyond the county line. Oh shucks, that won’t work. They get sprayed by the local government for mosquitos.

Don’t work at Dow, Phillips or any other place the government military and domestic law protect or serve its employees.

I could quote many more but you should get the idea. Be an anarchist and hermit if you want; there are plenty of places in Canada you can do that. Oops, I forgot. They have a public health plan. Can’t go there, even on foot.

I prefer a government that cares about its citizens and tries to see they have at least basic needs met.

David Payne, Brazoria

Republican look-alikes ensure leftist victories

Congress calls Wall Street the black kettle, but look at Dodd, Frank, Rangel. Leftist Chicago politics rule despite only 20 percent support of such constitutional subversion (socialism, Marxism, communism). How do they violate the people’s will? Conservative voters face look-alike candidates at the polls. Obama’s elderly ideological look-alike McCain left little choice for Conservatives. Liberal crossover in the New Hampshire primary lifted the moderate darkhorse McCain, the nomination cinched on Super Saturday through an advertising blitz mischaracterizing McCain as a Reagan Republican.

Similar tactics were used in conservative N.Y. District 23, where Scozzafava’s and Owens’ ideologies were indistinguishable following the Republican opening created through an Obama appointment enticement. After Conservatives belatedly introduced their own third-party candidate, Scozzafava retained her Republican place on the ballot while campaigning for Owens. Within four hours of taking office, Owens’ promise not to support Obamacare’s public option was broken. Pelosi promises of amendments to the unread legislation, pork earmarks and future campaign support sealed the deal. Promises today are empty words. Arrogance and condescension rule. Officeholders run roughshod over voters. Apathy and busyness lead to inactivity, unawareness and easy deception. The vacuum is filled in our church denominations by gay activists. Awaken America! Tea Party!

Rodney Weems

Sweeny

Last week we said thank you to veterans of all eras for their service to our country, both in time of peace and war. We could not have done that without the support of many individuals, organizations and corporate sponsors. The host committee would like to acknowledge those, without whose support, we could not have successfully completed our mission statement: “Saluting our Veterans With Pride.”

Residents and employees of Sweeny can be proud of their efforts to showcase the city to its many visitors last week. Beautification, Civic Club, Garden Club and individual residents worked to make our city shine. The Civic and Garden Clubs also provided financial assistance to the Committee. Residents continued to showcase, as they came out to show their appreciation on the day of the parade — huge thanks.

Co-host VFW Post 8551 served an outstanding breakfast to veterans. They received assistance from students of Sweeny’s Student Council and members of West Columbia’s Senior Citizen’s Center. A program was presented by students of Sweeny Elementary’s fourth grade.

Numerous law enforcement agencies and volunteer fire departments provided traffic control throughout the day. Sweeny Rotary helped locate antique and classic vehicles providing rides for the Grand Marshall, guest speaker, Congressional Medal of Honor recipients and other veterans. Members of REACT and the Brazoria County Fair Association assisted in placing all entries in the proper order. With their help, the parade started on time and completed safely and without incident Also, providing additional safety for the day, the Sweeny Hospital District ramped up capabilities to handle the increased population in town for the event.

We particularly would like to thank all of the schools that participated either in the parade and ceremony. Bands: Sweeny, West Columbia, Damon, Angleton and Danbury ISDs. Junior ROTC units: Marine Corps — Alvin ISD and Air Force — Brazoswood. Both JROTC units provided drill demonstrations during the ceremony, and the combined membership of the bands played the national anthem at the ceremony, with power and clarity not previously heard in Brazoria County.

Contributing to the success of the program at the stadium included the following: Program Coordinator Donna James; Brazoria County Sheriff Office Honor Guard Team, Service Flag presenters, J.E. Robinson, C.R. Atkinson, David Brightwell, Johnny Follett, Frank Vietz, Tug Grumbers, George Hall, Jackie Matthews and Frank Burttschell; The KIA flag was presented by Frank Lawrence; Buglers ó Al Parrott and Bill Primrose; Bruce Coburn; James Glover and his cannon loaders’ and an AH64 helicopter (Apache) of the 1/149 Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, Army National Guard, Ellington Field. The “Apache” was piloted by Captain Joseph Trevino of Houston and Captain Randall Wright of Ore. Finally, the support of the Sweeny ISD was invaluable. Sweeny ISD made its facilities and personnel available, ensuring an outstanding program was possible.

Providing food service at the ceremony included the following: Rita McMillan and members of Sweeny United and Old Ocean First Baptist Church; Lions Club and Lutheran Church members cooked up hot dogs provided by the Sweeny Volunteer Fire Department and corporate sponsorship; and Masonic Lodge of Sweeny.

Corporate sponsors included BASF, ConocoPhillips, Chevron Phillips, Dow Chemical, Freedom Flags, Gulf Coast Paper, H-E-B, Louis Enterprises, Stewart’s Food Stores, Sonic of Sweeny, Waste Connections, and the Walmart stores of Angleton and West Columbia. Mrs. Baird’s Bread and Sysco Food provided discounted rates on their products.

Lastly, we want to acknowledge the assistance provided to the committee by West of the Brazos Military Troop Support, Inc. We also want to thank them for their ongoing day-to-day efforts to support our active veterans. Well done.

If we have missed anyone, please accept our apology and our thanks. Host Committee members.
